History

In 1993 the Grupo de Zooarqueología de Camélidos (GZC) was formed in Argentina, which was recognized by the International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ) as a Working Group in 1995. The GZC stimulated the development of studies related to South American camelids since different perspectives, in particular archaeofaunal, generating both its own publications and events (Tilcara 1994, Horco Molle 1998 and Tilcara 2003, 2017), which brought together researchers from Argentina and other countries. The objective of this workshop is to continue with the aforementioned line to publicize the research work that is being carried out and to encourage the exchange of advances and problems related to South American camelids. The proposed themes revolve around the relationship between camelids and human groups, involving issues that include, but are not limited to, the management of wild and domesticated animals, issues related to the environment and their impact on the populations of these animals or the role of camelids in the social organization of past and present societies. The research areas proposed by the workshop contemplate views from different disciplines (archaeology, biology, social anthropology, etc.) in order to achieve an interdisciplinary integration framework of the various problems that these studies involve. We hope to have the presence of all those researchers from Argentina and other countries who work on the different topics covered by the study of South American camelids.
